Description

Our new creation is here: the Domino J MasterBucker – pure Jazzmaster tone for those who don’t wish to contend with the age old single coil hum conundrum.

As well as making a visual statement for your Jazzmaster, the Domino J’s split coil on a diagonal design offers all the warmth and clarity of a classic JM pickup but in a humbucking design which we think Leo would approve of.

Inspired by his classic P Bass and Comanche split coil designs, the Domino J uses Alnico pole pieces and Heavy Formvar pickup wire for a warm and classic California tone.

Its design follows the standard 51mm Jazzmaster spacing (left to right) which gives the normal 10.2mm horizontal pole piece to pole piece spacing but with the dual coils arranged in a diagonal fashion an effective string to string spacing of 12.5mm is achieved. The tonal effect of this is a gorgeous string separation coming through your amplifier with an almost hi-fi quality in the clarity.

Tonally the Domino J is even clearer than a normal Jazzmaster pickup with additional warmth and a thicker tone. Designed by us to offer humbucking within a classic Jazzmaster pickup footprint it’s best to think ‘Fender-y’ rather than ‘Gibson-esque’. Achieved with Alnico magnets rather than the usual humbucker ‘steel poles + bar magnet’ approach, the emphasis is on clarity and warmth for all your normal Jazzmaster tones ‘on steroids’ as it were rather than aiming to turn your beloved JM into a Les Paul or a Metal machine.

All the Jazzmaster tone and fun but with none of the hum!

Installation:

The installation of your Domino J MasterBucker pickup is just as straightforward as any Jazzmaster pickup installation with the same soldering to be performed as if it was a standard single coil design – one white (hot) wire to be connected to the switch and one black (ground) wire to be soldered to ground (usually to the top of the volume pot).

Being a split coil design in a Fender style it is possible to remove the cover and see and study the connecting wires between the two coils and move the coils away from each other slightly – exactly as it is possible to do with a classic Precision Bass pickup. We have designed a unique ‘snap on’ retainer piece of vulcanised black fibreboard for the underside of the pickup which helps ‘locate’ the coils into the position in which they are to be installed. This, in addition to the cover being installed, helps the coils to keep their shape and position and when installed under the downward pressure of the mounting screws it is not possible for the coils to stray from their intended position. Please however exercise caution when handling or inspecting the pickup without the retainer or cover fitted – as with all guitar pickups, connections between coils are always delicate and should be treated with care.

Delivery By default all of our pickups are shipped with Royal Mail who we find to be excellent both within the UK and Internationally. Their rates enable us to offer prices that are very reasonable for our customers and the timeframe is great for the vast majority of countries. We find that, once despatched, Royal Mail tend to take 1 working day within the UK, 2/3 working days within the EU, 4/5 working days to North America and Worldwide. These are guidelines and of course some countries differ and the level of ‘officiousness’ in customs departments differs massively worldwide. If ordering from a country which is notorious for taking a while to process imported goods (we can think of a few!) please build this into your expectation on the timeframe after despatch. How long will it take to make? As a small pickup maker handmaking within an extremely busy workshop we expect to complete all pickups sets within 16-20 working days (Relic’ed orders 5 days longer). We sometimes work quicker than those timeframes and we’ll always endeavour to finish your pickups as quick as we are able to of course. We can sometimes process a rush order if you have an upcoming, important concert or perhaps if you are buying for a relative’s birthday etc - feel free to message and we’ll always see what we can do.
