Other Pickup Designs

At Radioshop, we are huge pickup aficionados and it gives us great pride to add the pickup designs below to our lineup. Nearly all of the designs you see below were requests from the fantastic luthiers who use our pickups passionately in their builds. What you see on our website is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of what we are able to make and with a very busy workshop with the emphasis always on making your pickups, sometimes things are available and we just haven’t had a chance to add them to the website yet. Feel free to ask if you’ve seen something on our social media but don’t see it here or if you have something custom in mind – we love questions that start with ‘Could you make me …?”!

‘The RadioTron Classic’ Filtertron

An absolute legend in twang history, the classic 'Filtertron' design sounds the way it does because of its combination of an oversized magnet conbined with an underwound coil compliment compared with other designs. The result? Smoothness all the way in the neck and that lovely twangy, string separation in the bridge. A myriad of classic tones can be nailed with our RadioTron pickups set. The first RadioTron was made for the fantastic Justin Sandercoe for his custom guitar from Gray Guitars of London but the recipe was actually honed over years of rewinding Filtertrons sent in by customers for a better tone. Check out the video (see right) to hear Justin putting a neck RadioTron through its paces.

Bridge and Neck

Here we present our own take on the classic Jazzmaster tone with our ID reduced wax potting technique to give added oomph and character. We are very proud that our ID:Jazzmaster pickups are OEM in Gray Guitars' Skipper and you can watch the fantastic Daniel Steinhardt of That Pedal Show enjoying the set in his guitar in the 'Watch' Tab to the right. It's a long one so settle in and enjoy or forward to the 1 hour 20 min mark to hear the set in action. The Jazzmaster pickup with it's short height but very wide spread has a unique sound in the guitar world. It has a deep and rounded bass response which coupled with a wonderful clarity and warmth in the highs and mids gives a great all rounder pickup sound. A real underdog pickup design and one we like a lot. Features heavy formvar wire for a classic '60s tone. Also available: '62 Jazzmaster set, please enquire.
