‘Inspired by’ Series

It’s with great pleasure that we introduce our new ‘Inspired by …’ pickups series. All of the sets below started out life as requests from our customers to absolutely nail the exact tone of a classic guitarist. Quite often the email goes “I’m looking to exactly recreate the tone of …”. Our answer is always “Say no more’ and then as always, we go to town on the detail – scouring as many sources and articles as possible to put the perfect set together. The results are the sets which now take pride of place in our lineup below. Please note that none of these sets are licensed by the original player and are strictly ‘Inspired by …’ sets. The names of the sets are kept vague for obvious reasons! It’s worth noting that all of these sets were intended to be one-offs for an individual customer. A couple of pictures later on our social media and these are now some of our most hotly requested pickup specs! As always, if you have something in mind you don’t see below, we’d love to hear from you.

‘The Black Strat’

Our tribute to a legendary Strat set! The Black Strat set is the most requested custom order from our customers and has been a huge pleasure for us to put together. The result of countless hours of research into the engine room behind a classic Strat, we’ve matched the outputs and wire choices to this original ‘Frankenstein set’ exactly and with our hand winding recipe, those of you seeking to nail this classic tone will be delighted with the resulting sound. We had some scepticism at first about that huge bridge output: “Will it be too much for the neck and middle?!” Our first play confirmed we had nothing to worry about – the neck has that classic Formvar warmth, the middle gives biting twang for rhythm work and the transition to the bridge for those towering solos is a smooth one. A lot of fun to play!

‘The Black One’

Our ‘Black One’ pickups set started out as a request from a long time Radioshop customer to nail that stunning JM tone exactly. In developing the set we were very fortunate in being able to piece together the details from a combination of sources, gaining access to readings from limited edition signature guitars, gleaning nuggets of info from those on the inside and scientifically analysing photos to get things spot on. We feel we’ve got every detail just right. You guys seem to agree too – our ‘Black One’ Strat set is now easily our most requested pickups set. This set is closest to our Vintage ’63s tone wise, featuring Heavy Formvar wire to nail that sweet, mellow yet expressive tone JM is famous for and features a custom stagger and output to enhance nuanced playing. With a warm, round bottom end, a prominent mid response and delicate highs, the Black One set is the perfect set to enjoy long sessions of playing.
  • Hand Bevelled, Vintage Staggered Alnico 5 Magnets.
  • Handwound with 42 AWG Heavy Formvar Wire.
  • Outputs: 6.2k (N), 6.0k (M), 5.8k (B).
